The Spirit of Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving:

Thanksgiving: Tis the season to be thankful: I am sending on a chapter from Passages of Hope.
It’s from the section dedicated to the month of November and the spirit of Thanksgiving.

November: A month of Thanksgiving:

Week One: Thanksgiving for family:
What can you do to promote world peace? Go home and love your family.”
– Mother Teresa

Story: A Family Dinner:
I have several wonderful student families. A few months after I started teaching Beth and Robert, their parents invited me to their home to share dinner with them. They have a heartwarming family tradition. Each night the parents read a Bible verse to their children. Each child is asked to comment on that verse. This is followed by family prayer before meals. What a marvelous way to inculcate spiritual tradition into the lives of their children!
Moral of the story:
Many are not blessed with such heartwarming stories about family life. It all depends on how each situation is viewed. We can become strengthened by dysfunction in families or we can succumb to a state of victimhood. Gratitude for each family member strengthens the muscles of survival.
Did your family come with a bucket load of challenges? Instead of focusing on the negative, try being grateful for their strengths. Think about their positive contributions to family life. Make a list of the ways they supported you.
The family is the basic unit of society, the tiniest atom in our social structure, and the essence of our survival.
Loving your family is to love your community. Loving your family is to love your country. It all starts at home. It all begins in your living room. And it all spreads to the world at large.
We don’t have to accept everything our loved ones do. But we do need to be kind, respectful, and honorable towards them.
Action Plan:
Think about your family strengths. Learn to focus on them and incorporate those gifts into your life.
Practical Application to Your Life:
Do you want your life to bear the fruits of success, happiness, and fulfillment? Do you want to draw upon the gifts your family gave you? Do you want to add value to the world? First love yourself. Then love your family and extend that to your community.
Weekly take away:
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
-Exodus 20:12
May all my readers be richly blessed with happiness and abundance.
