Instead, she was called into the principal’s office and given the prognosis of schizophrenia, with the promise of being institutionalized in a mental hospital if she didn’t seek immediate psychiatric help. Growing up with an alcoholic father, she had frequent auditory and occasional visual hallucinations. She also tattled with chronic depression, anorexia and suicidal urges. Today, she teaches music out of her home in Webster Groves, Missouri and serves as a music therapist in three local nursing homes. She could have accepted the dire prediction of being hospitalized for life. Instead, she purposed to build normal life and the universe provided her with the tools necessary to move forward.
